MICKEY MOUSE AND FRIENDS #297: “Wizards of Mickey, episode 2: The Dolmen Swamp” (All Ages)

Stefano Ambrosio (w); Marco Gervasio (p/i/c); Deron Bennett (l); Saida Temofonte (translation); covers by Magic Eye Studios and Marco Mazzarello

Publisher: BOOM! Kids
Format: monthly series
Concept: One of the longest-lived, most-successful comic book series in the industry's history comes to BOOM! and brings a little magic.

In this issue: The epic WIZARDS OF MICKEY tale continues! Student of the great wizard Grandalf, Mickey Mouse hails from the humble village of Miceland. Allying himself with Donald Duck (who has a pet dragon named Fafnir) and team mate Goofy, Mickey quests to find a magical crown that will give him mastery over all spells! Join BOOM! Kids for a whole new epoch in Disney publishing! (from boom-kids.com)

Review: Mickey’s team has arrived at Grand Haven in the Dolmen Kingdom to qualify for the Great Sorcery Tournament and take back the Diamagic stolen by Pete. This issue has a great message; though Pete and his crew are well versed in the art of cheating, Mickey and his pals use their brains to win. The artwork is wonderful, especially the designs of the various dragons. Very well done.

SUPER FRIENDS #21: “Happily Never After” (All Ages)

Sholly Fisch (w); Stewart McKinney (p); Dan Davis (i); Heroic Age ©; Sal Cipriano (l); cover by J. Bone

Publisher: DC
Format: monthly series
Concept: Introducing SUPER FRIENDS - a brand-new series for younger readers to meet the heroes of the DC Universe, based on the hot toy line from Mattel! Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash and Aquaman are here to save the day - and be your friends, too!

In this issue: Once upon a time...the Queen of Fables trapped the Super Friends! Can they win the day – or will there be no happy ending? (from dccomics.com)

Review: Everyone likes stories—especially comics—but for the Super Friends, the story is about to get very real, thanks to the Queen of Fables. Wonder Woman meets the witch Baba Yaga, Flash meets some leprechauns, Aquaman faces a shark, Superman meets John Henry, and Batman and Green Lantern face trouble, as well. But in addition to kindness, they each possess the one thing that makes stories magical: imagination. How they use that imagination to get out of trouble is not for me to tell you. But Fisch lets you put your own imagination to work in “What’s Your Story” and “Storybook Scramble.”

TINY TITANS #22 (All Ages)

Written by Art Baltazar & Franco; art and cover by Baltazar

Publisher: DC
Format: monthly series
Concept: It's all your favorite Titans, in their cutest possible form!

In this issue: How many stretchy Super Heroes can you fit in the Tiny Titans treehouse? As many as you like – until they get tangled into knots! Join the search when The Atom's family lose their tiny bouncy ball. Also, there's a new janitor at the school, and it's not who you think! Plus, the Bird Scouts welcome a shiny gold new... (from dccomics.com)

Review: Who knew that a tiny bouncy ball could cause so much trouble? Or that Plastic Man had a son named Offspring? I didn’t until I read this issue! (Who says comics aren’t educational?) Anyway, that ball gets everyone into a mess, most of all the Elastic Four—that’s Plastic Man, Elongated Man and their sons. How they get both into and out of their mess is simply hilarious. And I must say that Offspring’s happy expressions put a smile on my face as well.

WALT DISNEY’S COMICS AND STORIES #700 (All Ages)

Giorgio Salati, Riccardo Sacchi & Alessandro Ferrari (w); Ettore Gula, Roberta Migheli, Stefano Turconi & Antonello Dalena (p/i/c); Deron Bennett (l); Saida Temofonte (translator); covers by Dwitt & Magic Eye Studios and Corrado Mastantuono

Publisher: BOOM! Kids
Format: monthly series
Concept: One of the longest-lived, greatest comics in history comes to BOOM! Studios! A direct market event -- the title that was host to Walt Disney's most cherished characters that helped build a decades-spanning global empire, originally launched in 1940, has come to BOOM! Kids!

In this issue: The third longest-running comic book series in Direct Market history hits its 700th issue! Right behind Detective and Action Comics, and logging more issues than Captain America, Amazing Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, or Thor, Walt Disney's Comics and Stories enters a bold new era at BOOM! Kids -- with a bang! featuring a brand new team of super-heroes culled from Disney's Mickey and Donald universe, come adventure with The Duck Avenger, Super Goofy, and the man Mickey himself! (from boom-kids.com)

Review: You may have heard of a group of Spider-Man villains that call themselves the Sinister Six. Well, Emil Eagle, the evil inventor, has done them one better by forming the Sinister Seven! With Emil, the Phantom Blot, Peg-Leg Pete, Roller Dollar, Spectrus, Zafire and the Inquinator joining forces, it would appear our heroes—now calling themselves the Ultraheroes—would have their work cut out for them. But for us readers, it’s pure entertainment. The dialogue comes fast and hilarious on both sides, and it’s a trip watching Super Goof in action. Oh, you may want to make sure you throw your trash away the next time you attend a sporting event.
