Tuesday night, I was told that our regular pianist would not be in church this Sunday, and I needed to play offertory music. Now I have to admit that as much as I love making music, sometimes it can seem mundane. You know, we work on the SAME songs in adult choir, the SAME songs in youth choir, the SAME songs in praise band. And when I've done offertories before, they've been the same type of slow-tempo arrangements. So I found out I'd be playing this Sunday and started thinking of what to play. Having no luck, I prayed about it. And the second I finished, I felt God's presence, and He spoke loudly and clearly: "You know, John, you don't ALWAYS have to perform other people's music. I've given you the ability to perform, write/arrange and improvise. And I'd be MORE than happy to guide you if you'll let me." I thought of a hymn to arrange--"Praise To the Lord, the Almighty"--and went to work. I stayed up WAY past my bedtime (because when I'm inspired, I don't go by the clock) and finished it. And I must say, I have not felt so passionate about writing a piece of music in a LONG time.
I tell you, when you learn to put aside obstacles and just let it all fly, it's unbelievably liberating.
I just had to share.
